In the beginning, I was taught as little girl that God made me from the dirt and dust of the earth. When I came to school and began to learn, my science teachers told me I came from a cell that has evolved into human beings though natural selection. At the same time, my pastor in church was teaching me that god is the creator of all living things. In high school, and here at college, I began reading on other cultures, and I have learned that each has its own creation story; neither is right or wrong, but aspects of different cultures. The Bantu Creation Story is an African legend that comes from middle to southern parts of the Congo, in Africa, which has been told in many languages and dialects; and passed on through many generations. This story deals with Bumba, the creator, and how his stomach pains caused the vomiting of the earth and all of its components. The story begins, “In the beginning, in the dark, there was nothing but water. And Bumba was alone.” Darkness and water are key components to most creation stories because water is the basic means to all life forms. Darkness shows that there was no life or intelligence. The first thing to come for Bumba is the sun, which spread light over everything. Next, he vomited the moon, which created the night, then the stars, which was the light for night. Bumba then vomited nine living creatures, which created all the other creatures that walked the earth.
