Lauren Stillman Intro to Phil.- MWF 12:30 4.26.04 BARAKA Baraka: an ancient Sufi word, which can be translated as "a blessing, or as the breath, or essence of life from which the evolutionary process unfolds." In this world of wonders there are still places that have not been taken over with the shallow surfaces of Western commercialism. The amazing thing is not how widely the McDonald culture has spread, but how many corners it has missed. It is said that the great age of travel is dead - that there are no longer amazing, exotic, beautiful and fearsome places for the traveler to discover. The movie "Baraka" gives hope. On one level, the film is an hour travelogue. On another level, it is a meditation on the planet. The director went all over the globe to catch on camera natural and human sights. Some of them are as ordinary as the traffic in New York. Some are as amazing as a solar eclipse. Others are as desperate as the tribes of scavengers moving like animals over the garbage dumps of Calcutta. Watching the time lapse at points in the movie gives it a visual demonstration of how real life is.
