For thousands of years optical toys, shadow shows, 'magic lanterns,' and visual tricks have existed. From the early to late 19th Century a number of technologies and inventions were produced that lead up to the birth of the motion picture. In the 1920's the motion picture really blossomed. During this decade, silent black and white films were the predominant product of the industry. The 1930's brought a number of unique firsts. Sound and color were added to the pictures and the first drive in movie theater was opened in Camden, NJ. The American film industry extemely affluent, powerful, productive and the industry prospered in the 1940's while the European industry faltered. Hollywood film production reached it peak during the years 1943 to 1946, averaging over 800 films a year. The 1950's were known for post-war affluence, the rise of jazz and Rock and Roll. The films were no longer geared towards the adult crowd, but were now aimed at teenagers...
