This is TALK OF THE NATION. I'm Lynn Neary in Washington, sitting in for Neal Conan.
If you've filled your gas tank lately, you've probably noticed that the price of gas is on the rise. Last week, the Energy Department reported the price had hit a record high of more than $1.75 a gallon. In states such as California and Alaska, the price has already topped $2 a gallon. Not surprisingly, both political parties are trying to parlay the price of gas into a campaign issue. Presumptive Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry has criticized the Bush administration for its failure to pressure OPEC to increase production of crude, and the Bush campaign is running an ad criticizing Kerry for supporting higher gas taxes . So just how bad is the situation, really? And what are the factors that lead to increases in the price of gas ?..
