In Ralph Waldo Emerson’s essay, "The American Scholar", he describes the scholar as one who learns from three main things. ... According to Emerson, a true scholar is one who relies upon his own intuition and "self-trust" rather than being a compliant victim of society that does not think and act for himself. Emerson believes that such a scholar will “walk on their own feet, will work with their own hands, and speak with their own minds”. To Emerson, these are the greatest accomplishments of a scholar. Today’s scholar is different from the one that Emerson envisions. ... I consider myself an American scholar to a certain degree. ... As a scholar I understand the importance of working with my own hands in order to gain a better knowledge of my environment and the lives of those around me.
