Traditional Arranged Marriages Thousands of years ago love-marriages were common in East Indian culture. This type of marriage was called swamber; it literally means picking groom by self. Brides used to pick their grooms. It was very common practice among royal, upper and middle class families. However, there were problems with this type of marriages, because choice of many brides was largely based on groom’s appearance, family wealth, fame or groom’s demonstration of certain type of physical skills. Marriages started to fail and social leaders of that time expressed their concerns about swamber. As time went on, arranged-marriages were introduced and became very popular in our culture. Many people of non south Asian origin wonder what the heck is a arranged-marriage and some of them even hold a very negative view on these type of marriages. Personally, I don’t care about the type of marriage, as long as one can find a compatible life partner that is all matters. Success and the failure of marriages do not directly depend on the type of marriage, but it depends on the one’s personality, beliefs and values. Lifestyle of rural India is the core of Indian culture. Practices may slightly vary from state to state. In the rural areas, primary occupation is agriculture. Prior to 1950s, rural areas were isolated from cities. In villages people were self-sufficient and they traded goods with each other. For example, farmers would give share of their crop to carpenter or a blacksmith in return they will fix their very basic farming tools. Then farmer would sell rest of the crop to merchant in the village. They hardly ever got any money from merchant, and most of that crop went toward paying their crushing debts. Back then, girls helped their mothers to do the household chores such as preparing food, cleaning and weaving etc. Boys helped their fathers in their respected occupation. Very few parents choose to send their children to school.
