Generations now alive are amongst the first in history to be raised with the anticipation of old age. Approximately twenty percent of all human beings who have ever lived past the age of sixty-five are now alive. So profound is this demographic revolution that every aspect of social life and society is expected.
Expectations amongst older people are growing, their voice is stronger, and their demands more insistent. This generation has more energy than ever and many are out to experience all they can from life. Though many worry about being a burden to his or her family, the majority just wants to love and be loved in return. It is important to avoid stereotyping, however, since negative images of the elderly leads to lower expectations and performance amongst the old themselves. We must be supportive of this generation because they are very much the reason that we are here today.
