"Guernica"
On April 26, 1937 German Luftwaffe attacked a small town in Northern Spain, Guernica. The attacked shocked people everywhere and caused much devastation to the citizens of Guernica, killing many. Picasso was deeply troubled by the attack and began creating what is now his greatest masterpiece, "Guernica". The painting has become an international symbol for peace.
The painting is enormous, covering a large surface area. Despite the interest from the public, Picasso refused to explain the horrible imagery he depicted within. "Guernica" is full of symbols that relate to the horrors of war as well as the effects.
The large horse in the background, towards the center of the painting is the largest symbolic image. The horse has a large diamond tear coming from its eyes. The horse appears to be crying for the victims who are devastated by the attack...
