In the past few years, same-sex marriage has been one of the most debated and controversial topics. Everyone, married or not, has an opinion. For so many years, marriage has been defined as "the union of a man and a woman", others would even argue that marriage is made for man and woman to procreate. This poses the question, should homosexual couples be legally allowed to marry? The question on hand is one of complex nature. Gays and lesbians have come very far in the past years and it is now time to take the next step; allowing them to wed. Many wonder why homosexual couples want to marry if they can enjoy practically the same benefits and obligations as a married couple if they are considered common-law partners. Firstly, many of the couples consider that there is a qualitative difference between common-law partners and married couples. Secondly, the federal laws require them to wait a one-year qualifying period before becoming eligible for their benefits. And finally, everyone is entitled to their rights and freedoms and we are not promoting equality by not allowing same-sex couples to marry...
