Spiritual revivals, such as the Great Awakening, have all played a distinct role in the growth of the church in America, but one movement in the 1990s swept the country like nothing before. The vision of one college football coach grew into a successful men's movement known as the Promise Keepers. Just five years after its beginnings in 1991, David Blankenhorn, author of Fatherless America, calls it "the largest and most important men's movement in the United States today" (Abraham, pg. 2). The objective of Promise Keepers resulted in negative and positive responses by the public and would affect the church in a special way.
Bill McCartney, known mostly for being head coach of the University of Colorado, founded Promise Keepers with one desire in mind. "I envision men coming together in huge numbersworshipping and celebrating their faith together. I long to see men openly proclaiming their love for Christ and their commitment to their families" (Abraham, pg. 17).
