Since the Emerson v. Board of Education in 1947, many heated debates have been fought on the issue of separation of church and state. The 1st Amendment to the Constitution states "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances." The meaning of this Amendment has been interpreted many different ways and is still not fully understood. Our founding father's based our great country's principles on the Christian way of life. Prayer and Bible readings were in public schools from the time they came into existence. However, today talking about the Bible or praying in school is considered taboo. Also, with the removal of prayer, the posting of the Ten Commandments in schools and government buildings has been banned. This country was founded on the principles of Christianity; Congress opens sessions with prayers, displays Moses holding the Ten Commandments, and the Constitution has no mention of "separation of church and state", but yet Christian beliefs are being forced out of public places. I believe that these events play a major role in the direction America is headed...
