Government Policies and Social Inequality
We will be examining the inequality that women have encountered and been subjected to over time. This inequality has forced women into a particular role that has meant that they have not enjoyed the same or equal access to power, income and resources in relation to men. Traditional notions about women's role in society have played a large part when it comes to inequality.
There are three aspects we will identify and these three are not the only areas of inequality. We will outline inequality in politics, the workplace and in relationships.
There are numerous examples of political inequality in the current Australian parliament, with less than 30% of all House of Representatives and senate seats held by women. This is also highlighted more in the ministries, shadow ministries and cabinet positions, where it is even more unequal.
In the past:
Women from all states have only been able to vote since 1903 and up until then, had no legal opportunity to influence who would govern the country.
The first elected woman to an Australian Parliament was Edith Cowan in 1921 and it took another two years before women in every state of Australia could stand for parliament.
