This assignment will describe the development in which wheelchair basketball has received from the foundation stages of the sport to the present day situation. The assignment will also cover the general fitness requirements that are essential to participate in wheelchair basketball. An historical perspective on wheelchair basketball would not be complete without mention of the Second World War, (www.cwba.ca, 25/04/04). One end result of this global crisis was that society was confronted with an unusual number of people with physical disabilities. These people began to voice their opinions and through time people began to listen and understand that they had needs that had to be met beyond food and shelter, they had an ego, and they were worthwhile and that they belonged. In 1995 wheelchair basketball celebrated its 50th anniversary. The game was first played in the U.S.A., when basketball players injured during World War II adapted the running game to four wheels in order to continue their enjoyment in sport and particularly team sport, ( www.gbwba.org.uk, 21/04/04) Those early beginnings in U.S. Veterans Administration Hospitals promoted the formation of the National Wheelchair Basketball Association (N.W.B.A.) run by the players for the players, (www.nwba.org, 21/04/04). In 1944 Dr. Ludwig Guttmann opened, at the request of the British Government, a spinal injuries centre at the Stoke Mandeville Hospital, (www.paralympics.org, 21/04/04). The philosophy of the day was adaptation of particular sports as viewed through the eyes of rehabilitation staff. Basketball was perceived to be one of the most adaptable team sports, and was played in various parts of the world in the early 1940's.
