In 1989 a new wheelchair basketball constitution was established which led to the formation of the International Wheelchair Basketball Federation (IWBF). This move was the beginning of wheelchair basketball gaining independence and in 1993 IWBF took over as the full governing body of the sport “in 1993 IWBF was established as the world body for wheelchair basketball with full responsibility for development of the sport” (IWBF Website). ... As mentioned above player classification was introduced when wheelchair basketball was available to those other than people with spinal cord injuries. ... Many of the game rules are the same as able-bodied basketball there are the same time restrictions for shooting, time in the key and other elements of the game.
