Leland Stanford was instrumental in the creation and development of the American railroad system. This railroad system enabled the railroads and trains to become the best means of transportation for commerce and public travel for the American people in the 1800's. He also aided in the advancement of technology and the improvement and expansion of businesses. Stanford used unfair and illegal business practices to achieve what he wanted. Leland Stanford was both a Captain of Industry as well as a Robber Baron.
Stanford was raised on a farm in Albany, New York, where he learned the value of hard work early in his life. His father decided to move closer to a railroad in New York so that he and his family could make a living chopping down trees for locomotive fuel. Stanford's father wanted him to have a good education, so he sent him to a school near Utica, NY. After he had graduated, Leland went to Albany to seek a career as a lawyer. Once Stanford passed his bar exam he did what many other doctors and lawyers did at that time...
