Patch Adams is a controversial, yet funny movie starring Robin Williams. This movie shows the use of doctor-patient relationships and humor therapy as a way of treating ill and dyeing patients. It also touches on religion and prayer when practicing medicine.
The movie starts out with Hunter Adams, not yet known as Patch, committing himself into an insane asylum for trying to commit suicide. It is there that Hunter Adams finds out the joy and incredible feeling he gets from helping out people in need. From the healing he gives his fellow patients, he as well was healing himself and ultimately fell out of depression. It was from this experience that Hunter Adams knew he wanted to help out people for the rest of his life and continue to get that high. This is when Adams chooses to pursue medical school and become a doctor.
The beginning of the movie raises the big issue of personal relationships with ill patients. Even though Hunter Adams was not a doctor at this point, he showed that getting to know the whole person and interacting with them in a positive way could change the way they felt mentally and physically...
