Patch Adams is a controversial, yet funny movie starring Robin Williams. ...
The movie starts out with Hunter Adams, not yet known as Patch, committing himself into an insane asylum for trying to commit suicide. It is there that Hunter Adams finds out the joy and incredible feeling he gets from helping out people in need. ... It was from this experience that Hunter Adams knew he wanted to help out people for the rest of his life and continue to get that high. This is when Adams chooses to pursue medical school and become a doctor. ... Even though Hunter Adams was not a doctor at this point, he showed that getting to know the whole person and interacting with them in a positive way could change the way they felt mentally and physically. His roommate was mentally ill and extremely afraid of the “squirrels” running around in their room, so Adams took the personal approach to him and got him out of bed and able to get to the other side of the room. There is no medicine that can do what Adams did for his roommate in that situation. ...
After Adams leaves the asylum by his own will, he attends Virginia Medical School to pursue being a doctor.
