King Claudius: A Villain for the ages.
Every story, at its core, has a good guy and a bad guy. The difference between a regular story and a great story is a villain that is memorable and emotion provoking to the reader. King Claudius is an excellent villain. Claudius is everything a villain is supposed to be amplified; intellectual, methodical and arrogant. From killing his own brother to become king, and then even marrying his own sister in law, to then plotting to kill his nephew. Claudius brings the play Hamlet to a higher level of excitement and enjoyment for being the perfect villain.
Claudius takes the place of a beloved king who died, and still manages to have others look at him with admiration. He is able to make Gertrude forget her husband of many years, in a few short weeks. Gertrude sees her new husband as a respectable person who she can trust and put her faith into...
