The movie GI Jane, directed by Ridley Scott, is an ideal movie to display issues on feminism from both the female and the male spectrum. Demi Moore's character, Lieutenant Jordan O' Neal is a topographic analysis worker in the beginning of the movie, who is challenged by the senator to become a Navy Seal. This concept of a woman in the Naval Services is not thought of with great recognition by the US military. This sets the stage for a majority of the film, dealing with her struggle as a woman seeking recognition and respect amongst her male piers.
Women in military positions has been an issue of controversy for many years. Today, the typical occupational field of female service members is mainly administrative or medical but filmmakers (such as Ridley Scott) are attempting to show otherwise. This film is a stark contrast from Scott's earlier work. He began his career making fairly exotic films including: Alien, Blade Runner, and the fairy tale-inspired Legend. After Legend he returned to more realistic and modern territories. When he made GI Jane in 1997, the women in the military movement had already been in effect for years...
