Civil War The story “Hayfoot, Strawfoot! The Civil War Soldier Marched To His Own Individual Cadence” by Bruce Clayton explains the hardships the North and South dealt with during the Civil War. The Civil War was thought of as a way to get out of the house by young Americans who were inexperienced, and they did not realize the pain and suffering that went along with a war. Letters were written back from boot camp encouraging people to join the army because it would be fun. The Civil War can be characterized as a lack of seriousness in some ways. If fighting for what you believed in was the main reason for the war, then why did people go home and sometimes not come back. When a war is thought of, most causalities are thought to be by the hand of a gun, but that is not the case of the Civil War. Food was a very important issue for both the North and South. The Civil War armies enlisted no men as cooks, so soldiers who could not march properly or shoot were usually sent to be cooks.
