The Palace of Versailles
• Built in 17th Century
• Hunting lodge for King Louis XIV decorated very elegantly
• Louis is absolute monarch, so he wanted to control everything from people’s jobs, business, the way people think
• Didn’t like the salons because too much chance of people discussing ideas he doesn’t approve
• He turn hunting lodge into a beautiful palace so that people would go the extra 12 miles to get to the beautiful palace from Paris
• He controlled everything, music, entertainment, people bowed down to him as he enters room, etc… going there became too much of a controlled experience
• People only went there to be considered “good society”
• Calls self “sun King”- sun makes everything live- gives everything light
• Privilege was to watch him get up and go to sleep during the day
• His leadership was followed by Louis XV and Louis XVI
• They were all spending so much money that by the time Louis XVI, much money was owed
• Towards the 18th Century, France continued to spend more (War with England, they help cause the American Revolution) than they were making.
