In this written account of my presentation, I will raise the following questions of the film 'Good Morning Vietnam': - Whose story is being told? How do the images in the film portray the history of the Vietnam conflict? What techniques does the director use to inject realism into the film? How was the film 'geared' towards the audience of the 1980's and 1990's?
As the tutorial presentation included such elements as a brief introduction to the film, a very brief history of the Vietnam War, the main characters portrayed in the film and the major issues of the film; this written account will assume some prior knowledge of the film. It should be mentioned that there are assumptions made in this assignment regarding views of 'the majority', 'the minority', the 'people' etc, these are stereotypical, however only common held views are stated, as 'peoples' views in general, cannot be confirmed.
The query of 'Whose story is being told?' is one that I feel should be scrutinized within any study of a film, as this gives the viewer a 'direction' or 'understanding' of the politics and dominant ideology within the film. As 'Good Morning Vietnam' has a background setting of the Vietnam War, yet concentrates on a fictional character, this enables the filmmaker to portray to the viewers, a representation of the War through the character of Adrian Cronauer.
By using fictional characters, the actor is able to portray emotions, characteristics, behaviour and personal attributes that can be incorporated into a desired persona, thus giving the film the sought after outcome, whilst still providing an entertaining storyline...
