Evaluating Web Pages
Finding information on the Internet can at times become stressful, especially with
the numerous search engines that are now available to users. While browsing the Internet, a student can come across many websites or articles that are unimportant or unrelated to his or her original search. Green (2001) suggests that there are three factors to help students evaluate Web pages: purpose, content and functionality. The author goes on to describe each component in more detail (p.32).
The purpose or intent of any Web page is critical for evaluating the credibility of the information being provided. Green (2001) encourages students to look at the following when determining the purpose: the URL, titles/headings, and images. The URL should help a student know where the information came from. Determining where the information came from can help a student eliminate some websites and can ease the process of Web searching.
