Alzheimer’s disease Alzheimer’s disease is a permanent and progressive brain disease that destroys physical and psychological functioning in human beings, and regularly leads to death. It is the fourth leading cause of adult death in the United States. Alzheimer’s generates financial and emotional disasters for many Americans every year. Luckily, a large amount of advancement is being made to battle Alzheimer’s disease every year. To understand and combat Alzheimer’s disease completely, one must know who is most at risk of Alzheimer’s, what the disease does, where it affects the body the most, why it is so fatal, and when (if ever) can it be treated. Alzheimer's disease (AD) affects the parts of the brain that control memory, thought, and language. The disease is exemplified by difficulty in learning, a gradual loss of memory, decline in the ability to perform routine tasks, disorientation, loss of language skills, impaired judgment and ability to plan. AD begins slowly. At first, the only symptom may be mild forgetfulness.
