"We are one nation under God. We affirmed that today as Americans, not as Republicans or Democrats, and we did so proudly," said Senator Tom Daschle. Daschle's words express the feelings of many other Americans. Based on the fact that our country was built on Christian beliefs and principals, by removing God from the pledge we would be destroying the foundation of our country.
I believe that we recite the pledge as a sign of respect. It shows that we are proud to be Americans and live in a free country. The pledge, at the least, is a way to be grateful for all the people that sacrificed their lives so that we could be free. We do not recite the pledge to show that we are each individually Christians that believe in God, but that we are Americans that believe in the foundation of our country.
If we were to remove God from the pledge it would only cause more controversy in other area between the church and state. It's amazing how the people who get offended by the phrase "one nation under God" have no issues with using money that says "in God we trust...
