A black puck skimming across the clear ice, grunts and thuds, a wind-up unleashing a powerful slap shot, and a frenzied crowd vigorously cheering a goal. These are only a few of the ingredients that make up an ice hockey game. It is a special sort of world with its own tradition, terminology, heroes, and villains. The word "hockey" was most likely derived from the stick the players used. It was curved at the end, hooked just like a shepherd's crook, which, in French, was called hoquet (Eskenazi 10). However, not only has the name and the rules changed since the late 16th Century, the equipment and rules concerning the equipment have changed as well. The first forms of hockey equipment were simple and primitive. Nowadays, the equipment is protective and safe for the players. For instance, instead of little masks for the goalies, they have cages and helmets ("Goaltender's Equipment). These changes in equipment have not changed the game itself, other than that there are more rules pertaining to proper use of the equipment...
