There is a common paradox in legislation. It is generally created to improve the welfare of a society, but in its promulgation and implementation, a new set of unforeseen problems is often left in its wake. Such is the case of the One-Child Policy in China. Created to accelerate China's rate of industrialization through reducing its growing population, the governmental decree is successful in urban Chinese societies while experiencing failure in rural Chinese societies. In order to analyze the success and the failure of the One-Child Policy, it is important to discuss the history of China as it pertains to Confucius and Mao Zedong.
CONFUCIAN PRINCIPLES
Confucius believed that everyone had a role to play based on their relationship to others. If everyone fulfilled their duties and kept their place, then society would be stable and harmonious. Confucian values emphasize that family is the center of a moral and political universe.
