In aincient times and even in times today when there are no doctors around, Mayan villagers have to rely on a medicine man to heal their pains and diseases. Medicine men were a combination of doctor and priest, and had probably demonstrated a natural talent early in life. The medicine man does not have ordinary medicines but uses herbs, roots, and religion to cure the patient. He is also looked high upon in society and is also a teacher of his practices.
The cure of a patient is said to take many days. The main factor for the cure to work is based upon the trust and faith between the healer and the healed. The ancient healer must know that his patient must be helped to reclaim a sense of unity in his world, in order for any herbal remedy to be fully effective.
