Parking at ASU

The ASU Parking and Transit Services Department (PTS) have planned several initiatives for the upcoming months which are designed to improve parking problems and to address the parking needs of both students and faculty. These upcoming initiatives are a move for improvement; however we feel these efforts are not sufficient enough to support the everyday ASU commuter. Not only is there considerable traffic congestion on the main arteries leading to campus during peak times, but there are often long waits to enter or to leave a parking facility; as well as once in the facility it is extremely difficult to find a place to park.
The paper will discuss the following purposes: how the program is funded and where your parking fees are disbursed; outline problems noted with the ASU parking system; discuss possible solutions to some of the problems; and highlight facts which may be of interest to the everyday ASU commuter.
Funding for the Program
An area of interest and inquiry surrounds funding sources for PTS operations and projects, and there is much speculation about how revenue obtained from parking fees is used. PTS funding is derived from three sources: (1) parking permit fees varying from $75 to $225 per year; (2) visitor parking fees of up to $5 per day; and (3) citations which vary. The Board of Regents, which has monetary governance responsibility for ASU, has directed the Parking and Transit Services Department to be self-supporting. When one considers the myriad of ancillary support and personnel needed to operate the department and to maintain the multiple parking areas and facilities, one might imagine that the costs would be staggering. The overhead costs to keep the program going include employees to monitor the parking violators and issue tickets, maintaining the lots and structures for cleanliness, and the clerical staff at the parking and transit center to take care of all the ASU commuters.
