In the upper level of the IT Building at MVCC, there are on display many paintings, sculptures and photos by students and professors of the college. I was surprised at the level of talent on campus, and one particular work caught my eye because of all the functional aspects of art that could be applied to it.
The work is entitled "Slappy Hooper" by Scot Connor. The media was not listed, but the softness of the work as a whole leads me to think it may be watercolor. The painting is of a man on a scaffold high above a few city streets, painting a rainbow in the sky. The vantage point is what makes the painting so complicated. To the viewer, you seem to be looking at it in a convex mirror, like one found in a convenience store. The man's hand reaching up is supposed to be the closest thing to the viewer, making it the largest thing in the painting. The painting is representational, although it is not in proportion. The man's features are very exaggerated, like a caricature, and it is easy to tell he would not be in scale with the buildings if he were down on the ground...
