The use of herbs in medieval life was used for a variety of purposes. This was a time in which life was extremely hard, people had little land, if any, and depended on themselves for their food, medical problems and ailments. Herbs were an important part of people's lives. Herbs were used for everything from treatment of disease, ointments, amulets, or charms against evil and diseases to treating the theory of "humors" of that time, to cooking.
If you were a medieval gardener you had little land in which to plant your herbs. The gardens were sometimes fenced to protect them from animals, children and other destructive forces. Materials such as hedging, stone walls, earthen walls, wattle fencing (vines or willow woven between upright sticks), and wooden poles were used to protect the garden. Those who were in favor with the King would have a garden that might resemble knotwork and parterres (arranging plants to look like embroidery). These gardens would sometimes be planted to show works of raised beds.
