In Fly Away Peter by David Malouf, Malouf's attitude towards class discrimination is a very positive and hopeful one. Malouf positions us to respond to class discrimination as minor, inherited from parents and being disregarded by the new generation. The representation of class is through the main characters in the novel, Jim Saddler, Imogen Harcourt and Ashley Crowther, Malouf positions us to respond to class as a minor form of discrimination. Each of the characters represent a different class. Malouf develops Jim as working class, Imogen as middle class and Ashley as an upper class character. After Malouf establishs that each character is from a different class, he develops Jim, Imogen and Ashley as good friends. By portraying them as friends, Malouf shows that these characters of different classes are not class biased and positions us to respond to class as a minor form of discrimination. Malouf also positions us to read class discrimination as something which is inherited from our parents and being disregarded by the new generation of people. Jim's father represents working class and is very prejudice towards upper class people. Jim's father incourages Jim not to work for the upper class...
