To Kill A Mocking Bird Journal In my opinion the book deals with some very important issues and handles them in a way everyone can understand. The book deals with racism, prejudice, and child abuse and links them all together to create a very entertaining plot. My impressions of the characters are that they are like any other family. They have the hard working and caring father, who in most cases deals with things very sensibly. But has a lot of help from Calpernia, the maid. She acts like a mother to the children because theirs died when Scout was very young. She taught Scout how to read and write and talked to her whenever she was down. The older brother who feels it necessary to protect his sister, and usually succeeds in that. Like at the end of the book when Mr. Ewell was attacking them all he did was pull Scout away and try to save her. Jem is growing up and you notice that he acts a lot more mature then he did in the beginning of the book.
