The Passion According to St. John put on by the Whitman College Department of Music was performed on Sunday, April 18, 2004 at Saint Paul Episcopal Church in Walla Walla. Conducted by Robert Bode, starring Melissa Raz, Norman Smith, Niels Larson and others accompanied by a choir, string section, and flute, this classical religious piece entertained the crowd of worshipers for just over an hour.
Like any concert, the good and bad came hand in hand. However, I found that the likes heavily outweighed the dislikes this time around. One particular aspect of the show I enjoyed was the multiple dynamic changes by the choir. Put there to shock and liven up the crowd, they accomplished their goal as I was awed by the perfect blend of vocal ranges. In addition, I also was impressed by Melissa Raz who sang soprano. I had never heard anyone sing soprano before, and was blown away by how anyone could sing at a pitch that high and make it sound so flowing and easy on the ears.
Since the concert was held in a church, the selection was more than appropriate...
