To file for a divorce in the past in Manitoba your spouse would have had to commit adultery, or your spouse treated you with intolerable mental or physical cruelty, however because of the unilateral no fault divorce a spouse now has the right to end a marriage after one year separation for no reason. Most of the people who file for divorces are very selfish especially in situations where kids are involved because the child's feelings are either overlooked or pushed aside and valued less significantly than the parents feelings. Divorce is a very traumatic thing for a child to go through. The number of children who are involved in divorces has reached 36,252 causing over 21 thousand custody cases. (31% are granted) Unfortunately these figures continue to rise. In this report I am going to examine the physical, emotional and long term effects divorce cause children to suffer from. I am also going to look at how parents should tell their kids if they are getting a divorce because the way a child is informed relates to the way that they take the news.
