The first scene of the movie begins with a series of panning shots of inner city New York. These shots consist of close-up views of the average New York resident living in that particular area of the city. The first scenes are also made in a narrow panoramic view with black framing around the picture. This is made to give the viewer the impression that they are glimpsing through a window to view life in the New York ghetto, which also informs the viewer as to the setting of the movie. (Play scene)
In the Catcher in the Rye, the story begins with Holden briefly talking about himself and abruptly shifting to Mr. Spencer's house. The two stories differ in this way. Finding Forrester gradually gets into the story, helping the viewer along, as apposed to The Catcher in The Rye, where the reader is thrust into the scenario and forces the reader to draw his/her own conclusions as to the setting, time , characters, etc.
In the first scene, the sound is gripping and attention grabbing, this is created by the harsh lyrics of the freestyle rap and the accompanying ambient and atmospheric music playing as scenes of everyday life in the ghetto is played in almost slideshow-like format.
Throughout the rest of the movie; medium, and close shots are predominant, giving the viewer the impression that they are there with the main character, Jamal, as he ventures through life...
