Research with animals greatly advanced our knowledge in scientific pursuits, especially in biology, medicine and biomedical fields. Animal research has given us knowledge about the natural world and provided cure to many diseases. Yet there are people - for instance, some of the drastic pro-animal groups - who oppose any use or killing of animals for research purposes.
Some of the great contributions from animal research are discussed here in order to present arguments against the above opposing view. However, it is done so with eligibility that we should only allow those animal researches that are beneficial to the human and natural worlds.
It is a recognised fact that the immense wealth of knowledge on human and animal biology, anatomy, physiology and working of biochemical processes in living systems that we got today would not have come without experiments on animals that have been going on for centuries. We have not only learnt about the details of other species but used them to learn about ourselves which would not have been easy because of the fact that we could not experiment on living human being and the availability of dead humans for research purpose is always extremely scarce. There is no denying of the fact that this large amount of scientific knowledge has put us in an advanced stage for further research with the potential of some great benefit to humankind and all living kinds.
Animal research has found many cures for animal diseases. Just to mention a few out of numerous examples: research with cows and pigs has lead to the invention of vaccines and many other medicines that save the lives of millions of cattle around the world every year; and invention of anti-rabies vaccines based on animal experiments has delivered cure to a very common disease that killed dogs in epidemics through out the history...
