The text "Raw" written by Scott Monk and "Rabbit Proof Fence" Directed by Phillip Noice, are similar in that they compare and contrast the different ideologies of institutions and how they destroy and reform individual characters identities. Everyone in the world is in one institution or another, be it family to country, the texts I am comparing and contrasting are just examples of two.
Institutions affect individuals in both positive and negative ways. In Raw Brett experiences both the positive and negative aspects of the farm. In the farm Sam helps Brett and the other boys through positive reinforcement, trust and love. The negative influence in Bretts life is Rebecca, she represent the past in Bretts life and his old ways, while Caitlyn represent the future and potential in Bretts life. In "Rabbit Proof Fence" there are no positive experiences, only the negative experience of the half-castes identities being destroyed and reformed into "servants" for the white people in Australia. In Rabbit Proof Fence the authoritative figures in the institution are positioned to strike fear into the half casts and encourage them not to run away. The film techniques used on the authoritative figures, are low camera angles and heavy use of lighting to create the feeling that the viewer is seeing through the eyes of the half-cast children.
