At the start of the novel “A Bridge to Wisemans Cove” Carl was boring and fat. No girls liked him at that stage of his life, because of his weight, so he tried to hide his fat by wearing extra baggy shirts. He was also very lazy, he didn’t go for walks or do any type of sport. He had a very low self-esteem because he didn’t like his body. When he got a job on the barge he started to exercise and gradually lost weight from all of the extra movement. After his mother Kerry and his sister Sara left, he lost trust and didn’t think that his mother loved him anymore. He had to look after his brother Harley, which was pretty hard because Carl is very young and doesn’t know the first step of babysitting.
