Factitious Disorder
Any illness deliberately produced or falsified for the sole purpose of assuming the sick roll is the most common definition of Factitious disorder. The disorder is a psychiatric illness where a patient feigns an illness and is tested for many diseases, usually at a very costly price. Factitious Disorder (FD) is a real disorder that is the most common among people who have had a large amount of medical treatment or hospitalization from a true physical disorder, have a dislike or grudge towards someone in the medical profession, have work as a nurse or medical professional, have had a significant relationship with someone who works in the medical field, or who has self-defeating personality traits (APA, 1994). ... Middle aged men are the most commonly affected with chronic Factitious Disorder, which is Munchousen syndrome, (Adder). ... There are several psychodynamic explanations to the disorder such as; “background of neglect, a need to be the center of attention or feel important, a need to feel dependent, a need to ease feelings of worthlessness, or a need to feel superior to authority figures that is gratified by being able to deceive the physician” (Elwyn). ... Since the illness is factitious symptoms are not usually seen until the treatment is started.
