Mass hysteria by Oxford English definition is a large amount of wild uncontrollable emotion or excitement.
The book The Crucible is set in what I would refer to as the dark ages. It centers on a small community where the church and minister are considered to be of a high importance. During these times the minister was considered to be the head of the community and father to all the children and inhabitants of a village. These were very strange times because there were many rules and if you broke these particular rules you were to be punished. Things such as dancing and singing were considered to be works of the devil.
In the Crucible a group of young girls are caught dancing and singing naked in the forest. The news travels throughout the entire community and immediately witchcraft is considered to be the cause. The inhabitants are up in arms and demand that something be done to punish the girls for committing such atrocities. One of the girls who are terrified of their punishment slips into a so called "deep sleep"...
