*~*Cheerleading: A Sport Or Not*~*
What do you think about the controversy with cheerleading being a sport or not? In the McMillan Theory of Sports Definition dictionary a sport is defined as an activity involving physical exertion and skill that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often undertaken competitively (Dictionary). The McMillan Theory of Sports Definition also states that there is no opinionated scoring in sports and that a sport must have a definite winner. Cheerleading is not a sport under these definitions and here in why cheerleading doesn't qualify as one.
In the last statement of what defines a sport, it says that sports are often undertaken competitively which takes high school cheerleading out of the sports category because there are so many high schools that do not compete. While there are some high schools that do compete cheerleading is still in minority for competition (Jamie Scott). Sports also have to have definite scoring and with cheerleading there are different scores you can get for each category that there is and when compared to football shows very different style because football has a determined score for a touchdown which always stays the same. Scoring for cheerleading is different then most sports, there is a group of people called the National Cheerleading Association that make up how many points tumbling, motion technique, stunts and dance should be worth and then according to their judgement they give a score out of the maximum points that can be given (Mariah Nelson).
Since 1972, Title IX has not considered cheerleading a sport because of the fact that it is co-ed squad . The fact that all cheerleading squads in high school don't compete and are not only about competition has a great affect on whether it is a sport or not (Emily Badger)...
