Conflicting Walter Lee
Upon reading through various critical interpretations from several critiques of Lorainne Hansberry’s “A Raisin in the Sun”, two conflicts emerge as shaping the drama and the protagonist’s experience within this drama. The protagonist, Walter Lee, certainly experiences an internal conflict, as ‘Man versus Self’ plagues Walter Lee as he attempts to prove his manhood. Moreover, Walter Lee is faced with the conflict of ‘Man versus Society’ when undergoing the move into the white neighborhood. These two conflicts shape Walter Lee’s life, as he must ultimately come to terms with and cross not only an internal, psychological barrier, but also a societal obstacle in order to achieve his true self.
Walter Lee exists as young protagonist who is ultimately striving to become a true man. As the play begins, a husband, Walter, and wife, Ruth, are seen having a fight over Walters dream to become a mover and shaker in the business world by using an insurance check as a down payment on a business venture.
