Throughout history, many nations have attempted to change their economic systems, with mixed results. Japan and Great Britain were two nations that attempted to bring about economic reform over time. The efforts by Japan and Great Britain eventually came to be known as Imperialism and the Industrial Revolution.
Japan is an archipelago, a chain of islands, with very limited resources. During the 1800s, Japan was an isolated country because they did not attempt to trade with any country surrounding them or travel to any country, under penalty of death, due to strict laws of the Tokugawa.
