A Separate Peace Returning to Devon School, Gene Forrester remembers his experiences there during the summer session when he was sixteen years old. The second World War had just begun then. He remembers that his friend and roommate, Phineas (Finny) was considered the best athlete in the school and that one afternoon they went to a large tree by the river. Finny suggested that they jump from the tree into the river beneath them. It was the first time anyone so young had tried, because this feat was usually reserved for the older boys who would be joining the army. Both successfully made the jump even though Gene was frightened. After the first jump Finny organizes the Super Suicide Society, which devotes itself into initiating members by having them jump from the tree into the river. Each time, he and Gene must make the first jump, but Gene never loses his fear of jumping. All summer, Finny has conspired to keep Gene from making good grades. Blitzball, the Super Suicide Society, and the trip to the beach have all been a plan to keep Gene from getting an “A” in every course, and becoming valedictorian.
