I believe that A Journal of the Plague Year offered a more personal account of the plague despite the fact that it was not a true first hand account. A Journal of the Plague Year gives the reader more insight into the feelings of other people and it relays more vivid imagery then The Diary. They both use actual places and events but, A Journal of the Plague Year is a more insightful account. The description of the man who went to the pit to see his wife and children buried in A Journal of the Plague Year is a very touching account. Pepys never offers an account as vibrant and impacting in his diary. A journal of the Plague Year is more deliberate in what it tells the reader and how it presents situations unlike the diary.
Defoe conveys the mood of the city at the time of the plague better than Pepys. Defoe does this in many different ways including personification such as in the first paragraph of A Journal of the Plague Year. He tells of relatives mourning the recently deceased or their own cruel fate. It is obvious that Defoe's account was meant to be read by others because it was more vivid whereas Pepys skimps on the imagery in favor of a straight to the point relation of the story...
