Year 10 English Assignment-Young Digger
1) A brief synopsis of the plot-
Young Digger is the tale of a war orphan Honor, who gains the name Henri. The story starts in 1918 just as the Great War came to an end on Christmas day. Henri is begging for food outside the Australian Flying Corps and is mistaken for a German child and cast away but once the cook realises he is French he welcomes the boy in so beginning the start of the journey towards henries new life. He stays with the "Aussies" as Henri refers to them through out the book and stays the night there. Whilst there he tells the tale of his shattered life, though he cant remember much due to him being so young and the trauma. He tells of how he was found by the Royal Artillery battery in a destroyed car, he told of how his friend in the FAB has killed right in front of him and of how a previous incident resulted in his large scar on his left leg. He tells of how he ended up with the British squadrons being passed around as a mascot, the tale pulls the Heart strings of the men of No. 4 squadron and they agree to look after him. He immediately befriends Tim Tovell a flight mechanic for the forth and Tim begins to take care of him in a parental way.
Through out the first couple of chapters Henri starts to unearth memories of his mother and here lying g in the back yard dead, this brings about a loathing for Germans, which results in him getting into a fight with some of the begging German children...
