Understanding the role of the teacher Introduction When trying to understand the role of the teacher many influences and issues must be recognized before the role is not only understood but learnt and performed efficiently and effectively. Good teaching, well done, is hard and satisfying intellectual, emotional and physical work and it is also socially responsible work… Learning to be a teacher goes far beyond learning to be an instructor When analyzing this statement made by Groundwater –Smith, Ewing and LeCornu, ( 2003. p.vi), to try and further understand the role of the teacher, it becomes apparent that the work of a teacher can be demanding, yet rewarding work These demands draw on all facets of human ability, the physical body and the intellectual, emotional, ethical and spiritual mind. Learning to respond to these demands requires the acquisition of relevant knowledge and techniques as well as an understanding, appreciation and practice of reflection. Learning to be a good teacher rather than instructor and to gain satisfaction from such work, relies on the individual’s ability to value and model lifelong learning, respond to social issues and imperatives, understand and work within a school system, to teach across abroad curriculum and to create a climate for learning.
