Text, Lies, and Videotape
In Patrick Shannon's book, text, lies, and videotape, he uses stories from day-to-day life in an effort to challenge traditional thinking about learning, literacy, and life. In today's society, the debate about schooling is heavily focused on test scores and so-called "high-wage/high skill" lies. Shannon attempts to redirect this debate by pondering the question of how we wish to live together. He tells us stories from his life as a student, teacher, and parent to illustrate the changes that need to be made in our educational system. Text, lies, and videotape is a call to action for both parents and educators who want to make a difference in the education system to better the future for our children.
Patrick Shannon does not consider cultural and psychological literacy to be an acceptable approach for the educational system to take. He favors a more natural and critical perspective that embraces the differences and multiculturalism of today's children. Shannon believes that personal stories are the most important part of how we can learn and teach, and attempts to share this belief with us by filling his book with stories and anecdotes from his own life experiences.
