Unified Modeling Language is a standard notation for the modeling of real-world objects as a first step in developing an object-oriented design methodology. Its notation is derived from and unifies the notations of three object-oriented design and analysis methodologies. The first methodology is Grady Booch's methodology for describing a set of objects and their relationships. The second methodology is by James Rumbaugh and it is Object-Modeling Technique. The final methodology is by Ivar Jacobson and his approach includes a use case methodology. There were also others that contributed and contribute to UML, which provided the results of the work of Booch, Rumbaugh, and Jacobson's work that resulted in what is UML.
