Civil liberties are fundamental individual rights, such as freedom of speech and religion, protected by law against unwarranted governmental or other interference. These rights are given to people who are, legally, citizens of America. However, no right is fully granted to you. Some examples are rights such as the right to "pursue" happiness and protection from "unreasonable" searches.
The American Civil Liberties Union and the New York Civil Liberties today disclosed documents in an extraordinary sealed case in federal court involving the Patriot Act's expanded "National Security Letter" power. The ACLU lawsuit challenges the constitutionality of a provision that allows the Federal Bureau of Investigation to demand sensitive customer records from businesses without judicial oversight.
